Missionary Update: Journeying with Temba

Recently, I had a deeply meaningful conversation with both Charles and a young man named Temba. Charles is an old friend—I’ve known him since our soccer-playing days. One unforgettable moment in our friendship was when I broke my head during a game, and Charles helped take me to the doctor. Since then, our bond has grown, and I believe God has uniquely connected us for a greater purpose. Charles is not only passionate about God but also gifted in singing and connecting with others.

Through Charles, I was introduced to Temba, a 36-year-old Zulu man currently facing the challenges of homelessness. Our conversation with Temba was honest and insightful. He shared about life on the streets and his desire to come out of that situation. At the same time, he acknowledged the struggle that many face—stepping out of the streets only to fall back into them. These repeated cycles often reveal deeper, unresolved issues that require more than just physical help.

During our conversation, I shared with Temba that real change begins with a heart ready for transformation. Charles and I made it clear that while we’re here to support him, the desire to leave the streets must come from within. We recognized a truth that applies to many young men on the streets—they're not just looking for food or shelter, but for brotherhood, fellowship, and people who truly care and journey with them.

This conversation has opened up a path forward. Temba will now be joining us at Langtafel, a gathering that takes place every second Monday at Fountainbleau Community Kerk. It’s a space where people from all walks of life come together to share a warm meal and meaningful conversation. It’s a safe environment where Temba can connect with others, build relationships, and experience God’s love in a practical, communal way.

Charles and I are committed to walking this journey with Temba, not just hoping for change, but creating space where change becomes possible.
